In my opinion, the correct basic strategy on fours is to split them against a five or six in hope to have some more money out on the table and maybe a possible chance to then double against the weak dealer up card. All of that is possible unless the casino you're playing doesn't offer double after splits, in which case you wouldn't split fours at all.
